My Vibrant Blackpool

Opened on 29th September 1885 this standard gauge (143.5cm) tramway started life as a conduit line on Blackpool Promenade between Cocker Street (just north of Talbot Square) and Dean Street (near South Pier). The Depot was situated in Blundell Street. The Blackpool Electric Tramway Company operated the line until 1892 when it was taken over by Blackpool Corporation after expiry of the lease.

The report of the Blackpool Tower Company on the first year's operations has exceeded the most sanguine anticipations. The net receipts for the last eleven months are £12,389 14s. 9d., and of this £5940 7s. 11d. is available as balance. A dividend of 6 per cent. on preferred ordinary shares absorbs £2004, and 4 per cent. on the ordinary shares £1082 4s. 6d. £500 is set aside for the reserve fund.
The first electric double-deck trams were those built for the Blackpool Tramway in 1898.
Between 1896 and 1928 Blackpool’s original big wheel sat on the corner of Adelaide Street and Coronation Street.
